On July 4, according to the latest data released by South Korean institution SNE Research, the global electric vehicle battery usage from January to May 2022 reached 157.4GWh, a year-on-year increase of 77.3%. The market has continued to rise since the third quarter of 2020.

Judging from the top 10 global power battery loading volume from January to May, CATL continued staying top of the list with 53.3GWh of loading, with a year-on-year increase of 112.1% and a market share of 33.9%. LG New Energy maintained the second place with 22.6GWh, with a year-on-year increase of 7.9%, and a market share of 14.4%. BYD ranked third with a year-on-year increase of 210.5% and a loading of 19GWh, with a market share of 12.1%. Panasonic continued to maintain the fourth position, with a loading volume of 16.5GWh and a market share of 10.5%. The loading capacity of SK On reached 10.8GWh, with a year-on-year increase of 131.6%, but the market share decreased slightly to 6.8%. Samsung SDI ranking rose one position higher than that from January to April, with a loading volume of 6.9GWh, a year-on-year increase of 32.5%, and a market share of 4.4%. CALB’s loading capacity is 6.7GWh, a year-on-year increase of 154.3%, and a market share of 4.3%. GOTION High-Tech, SUNWODA and SVOLT ranked eighth to tenth respectively, with market shares accounting for 2.7%, 1.5% and 1.3% respectively.

From the perspective of market share, SNE analysis shows that thanks to the strong Chinese electric vehicle market, Chinese enterprises, with to be led by CATL and BYD, continue to lead the market growth. The market share of most Chinese enterprises such as CALB and SUNWODA is increasing. The data shows that from January to May, the six Chinese enterprises in top 10 global power battery loading (CATL, BYD, CALB, GOTION High-Tech, SUNWODA, SVOLT) once again increase rapidly with doubled speed, and the market share increased to 55.8%.

In May alone, the global loading capacity of electric vehicle batteries reaches 33.7GWh, an increase of more than 1.5 times over the same period last year. Despite the impact of COVID-19, the electric vehicle battery market has maintained steady growth for the 23rd consecutive month, and the market share is mainly from Chinese enterprises.

It is worthy noticing, as SNE mentioned, that the sales of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, equipped with CATL and LG New Energy batteries, has increased compared with April last year, but it is still in the process of recovery and is expected to continue growth in the future.

While the loading volume is increasing, itdcw has noticed that Chinese power battery enterprises are still increasing horsepower to expand production capacity and continue to promote the implementation of projects. In the past month, six Chinese enterprises in the top10 of the global power battery loading volume have announced their project dynamics.

On June 27, GOTION High-Tech held the 5th New Energy Economic Forum and the opening ceremony of GOTION High-Tech in Göttingen, Germany. It is reported that the Göttingen base, as GOTION High-Tech’s first battery production and operating base in Europe, is expected to start the transformation at the end of this year. According to the plan, the project is divided into two phases: Brownfield plant and Greenland plant, with annual output targets of 6GWh and 12GWh respectively. The first phase of Brownfield plant reconstruction is expected to be officially launched by end of 2022. In September 2023, the first production line of 3.5GWh will be officially put into operation. The base Brownfield and Greenland plants are expected to achieve an annual production capacity target of 18GWh after they are fully put into operation.

In terms of overall production capacity planning, GOTION High-Tech has previously raised its production output capacity target in 2025 from 100GWh to 300GWh.

On June 22, CATL disclosed that the company’s 45-billion-yuan private placement was implemented. According to the previous private placement prospectus, the company’s raised funds are intended to be used for the following projects after deducting the issuance expenses: CATL Fuding Production Base Production, CATL Guandong Zhaoqing Production Project Phrase I, CATL Jiangsu Phrase Ⅳ Power and Storage lithium-ion battery R&D and production project, CATL Ningde Jiaocheng lithium-ion power battery production base project, and CATL advanced technology R&D and application project.

According to CATL calculation, the company’s battery production capacity is estimated to reach more than 670GWh by 2025.

From the perspective of future production capacity demand and the company's existing production capacity, the company's production capacity gap in 2025 will not be less than 390GWh. The annual capacity of the new lithium-ion battery in the company's fund-raising project and the estimated capacity of the relevant battery capacity construction projects announced since the company issued this issuance plan are about 353GWh. The capacity gap is greater than the capacity supply, which meets the company's business development needs.

On June 17, SUNWODA announced that SUNWODA Automotive Battery plans to jointly invest and establish a joint venture with Dongfeng Group and Dongfeng Hongtai to research and develop the cells and modules of power batteries and energy storage batteries and their related components to meet the needs of Product demands of Dongfeng Group, Dongfeng Hongtai and their related parties for automotive power batteries and energy storage batteries.

According to the recent research report analysis by Huaxin Securities, in terms of power batteries, SUNWODA’s production capacity in 2021 is about 10GWh, and the capacity is expected to reach 40GWh in 2022, with a rapid increase in production capacity. It is expected that the company's power shipments in 2022 are expected to exceed 10GWh, and the revenue is expected to exceed 10 billion yuan.

On June 14, the first line of the production base project of Findreams battery under BYD in Shengzhou, Shaoxing was opened. It is reported that the project was signed on August 19, 2021, with a total investment of about 13 billion yuan, covering an area of about 1,800 mu. After all, the annual output value is expected to exceed 20 billion yuan. It is BYD’s the largest investment and the highest output value project in Zhejiang. The Phrase Ⅰ, with an investment of 7 billion yuan, will produce DM-i special blade batteries with an annual production capacity of 15GWh. Up to now, BYD has established two powder battery production bases in Zhejiang. On April 3 this year, Zhejiang Taizhou city and Xianju County signed a strategic cooperation agreement with BYD in the form of “Cloud Signing”, and the annual output of 22GWh new energy blade battery project was settled in Xianju, which is one of the largest manufacturing projects in Taizhou in recent years.

Founder Securities believes that BYD's battery capacity will reach 135GWh by the end of 2021, the effective capacity will be 285GWh by the end of 2022, and the capacity will reach 445GWh next year. The second position in China is stable, and the gap with CATL is narrowing.

On June 12, the third phase of Wuhan base project of CALB Power Battery and Energy Storage System was lunched in the General Aviation Industrial Park of Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone. The project has an investment of 8 billion yuan.   After the project is completed and put into operation in early 2024, China Auto Valley will add 20GWh of new energy vehicle power battery capacity. CALB Power Battery and Energy Storage System is the first Large-Scale New Energy Vehicle power battery project in Wuhan. The first and the second phrases have a total investment of 10 billion yuan and an annual production capacity of 20GWh. The third and the fourth phrase of the project were signed in May this year, with a total investment of 12 billion yuan and a planned production capacity of 30GWh. After CALB’s Wuhan base is completed and put into operation, the annual production capacity can reach 50GWh.

According to the previous plan, the target production capacity of CALB is 500GWh by 2025.
